Self-Control

Once, Ashtavakra begged the great Rishi Vadanya of his daughter, Suprabha. The Rishi promised to give his daughter if Ashtavakra makes a journey to the scared North and visits a female ascetic named Disha. Ashtavakra agreed to this. He then reached the palace of the ascetic lady and informed of his arrival. Seven beautiful ladies welcomed him. He then entered the palace and saw an old lady with white robes. Both of them greeted each other. The other ladies left. They conversed with each other for sometime and soon it was night time. Both, of them went to their respective beds but soon the lady began to tremble with cold and went to the bed of the Rishi and hugged him. But, Ashtavakra remained stable. He told her that he had promised to marry Suprabha, the daughter of Vadanya. The lady said she wanted him to only stay in the palace for a few days. Ashtavakra agreed. Soon, it was evening time and Ashtavakra asked the lady to fetch some water for ablution. He finished his ablutions and then had the food which the lady had prepared. Again it was night time and the lady leapt for Ashtavakra's bed and wanted to sleep with him. Again he said he had already promised to marry Suprabha. Then she said she had done this to test his celibacy as per the instructions of Rishi Vadanya. Ashtavakra then begged to return to his hermitage and Disha agreed. Ashtavakra then went to the abode of Rishi Vedanya and related his adventure. Rishi Vadanya was pleased and happily married his daughter to Ashtavakra.

Devotion Wins All

There was once an Asura (Demon) named Hiranyakashipu. He was the younger brother of Hiranyaksha (who was killed by the Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu). In order to avenge the death of his brother, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penances. Lord Brahma was pleased with his austerities and asked him what he wanted. Hiranyakashipu asked for a boon that he should neither be killed by a man nor a beast, neither by day nor by night, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither on earth nor in the sky and finally without any weapon. Brahma granted him this boon. With this boon, Hiranyakashipu became very powerful and troubled everyone in the three worlds. He asked everyone to treat him as God as he felt he was equivalent to one with his new gained powers. Everyone had to obey him as they were afraid of him. But his son, Prahalad, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. When he was in the womb of his mother, Kayadu, he listened to many stories of Lord Vishnu from Sage Narada and developed firm faith i...

Why Tulsi Is Not Offered While Worshipping Ganesha

Once upon a time Tulsi, the daughter of Dharmaraj, was visiting all the holy places reciting the name of Lord Vishnu in order to get married. Once, in her journey on the banks of the Ganges she saw a handsome man with a charming smile on his face wearing yellow silken garments and sandalwood paste on his limbs and wearing gem-studded ornaments. He was meditating on Lord Vishnu as well. This handsome man was none other than Lord Ganesha. Tulsi immediately fell for him and asked him who he was. But, Lord Ganesha did not respond. She then poured some water on him and pushed him with her forefinger. Though Ganesha's meditation was disturbed, he smiled and asked her who she was. After giving her introduction, she asked him to marry her. Ganesha objected saying he was a celibate and not interested in worldly matters. Tulsi got angry and cursed him saying he will have to marry a wicked lady. In turn Ganesha cursed her saying she will turn into a plant and will marry a demon named S...
