There was a king named Samvarana who was the ruler of the kingdom of the Bharatas. He once set on a hunt to a forest. There he saw a deer and chased it. After chasing it for a while, he got exhausted and drank water from a lake nearby. At that moment, he saw a beautiful woman with great splendor. Immediately he went after her. But she disappeared! He then searched for her everywhere but could not find her and fainted in grief. At that time the woman reappeared and woke him up. She told her name was Tapti and she was the daughter of Surya (Sun God). He asked her to marry him according to Gandharva rite (mutual consent). She did not agree. She asked him to approach her father through penance and meditation and then marry her. So, Samvarana started meditating on Surya day and night. Sage Vasishtha was impressed with him and told him he would go to Surya and ask for Tapti's hand on Samvarana's behalf. Samvarana bowed to him in reply. Vasishtha left to the abode of the Sun god. He told Surya about Samvarana's interest in Tapti. Surya readily agreed. Sage Vasishtha bought Tapti to earth. Samvarana and Tapti got married and lived happily ever after.
