Before Cinderella, there was Shakuntala

Once a lovely girl was born to Sage Vishwamitra and the celestial damsel Menaka. Menaka dropped the new born baby in the hermitage of Rishi Kanva and left. Kanva was doing his daily prayers when he heard Shakuntal birds fluttering around the baby. He adopted the baby and called her "Shakuntala". Shakuntala grew up to be a beautiful woman. One day King Dushyant of Hastinapur came to the forest to hunt. He saw Shakuntala and immediately fell in love with her. He asked her to marry him. She agreed and they got married in the Gandharva style (Where a woman chooses her own husband. They meet each other on their own accord and consent to live together). A few days after their marriage a messenger informed King Dushyant that he was needed for some urgent work in Hastinapur. He then gave a ring to Shakuntala and told her he would send his ministers to bring her to his palace and left. Shakuntala was miserable and could not stop thinking about Dushyant. Once when Sage Durvasa came on a visit to Rishi Kanva's hermitage, she did not notice him and welcome him as her thoughts were always on Dushyant. Durvasa got angry and cursed her stating since she forgot to welcome a guest lost in thoughts of some person, the same person will also forget her! Shakuntala was devastated and asked him for his forgiveness. Then he told her the person will remember her if he sees an object he has given her.

Devotion Wins All

There was once an Asura (Demon) named Hiranyakashipu. He was the younger brother of Hiranyaksha (who was killed by the Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu). In order to avenge the death of his brother, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penances. Lord Brahma was pleased with his austerities and asked him what he wanted. Hiranyakashipu asked for a boon that he should neither be killed by a man nor a beast, neither by day nor by night, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither on earth nor in the sky and finally without any weapon. Brahma granted him this boon. With this boon, Hiranyakashipu became very powerful and troubled everyone in the three worlds. Why Tulsi Is Not Offered While Worshipping Ganesha

Once upon a time Tulsi, the daughter of Dharmaraj, was visiting all the holy places reciting the name of Lord Vishnu in order to get married. Once, in her journey on the banks of the Ganges she saw a handsome man with a charming smile on his face wearing yellow silken garments and sandalwood paste on his limbs and wearing gem-studded ornaments. He was meditating on Lord Vishnu as well. This handsome man was none other than Lord Ganesha. Tulsi immediately fell for him and asked him who he was. But, Lord Ganesha did not respond. She then poured some water on him and pushed him with her forefinger. Though Ganesha's meditation was disturbed, he smiled and asked her who she was. After giving her introduction, she asked him to marry her. Ganesha objected saying he was a celibate and not interested in worldly matters. Tulsi got angry and cursed him saying he will have to marry a wicked lady. In turn Ganesha cursed her saying she will turn into a plant and will marry a demon named S...
