A tale of illusions

Bhanumati was the grand-daughter of Lord Krishna. In her childhood, while spending time with her friends in the Raivataka forest, she blindly ran and bumped into Sage Durvasa. He got angry and cursed her stating that she will be kidnapped by a demon. Sage Narada saw this and asked him to calm down. Durvasa felt sorry that he had cursed Bhanumati in anger. He told she will eventually be rescued and would get married to a worthy man. A few years later, Bhanumati grew into a beautiful maiden. When she was spending time with her friends in her garden, the demon Nikumbha kidnapped her. Her panic stricken friends then informed others about this. Then Lord Krishna, Arjuna and Pradyumna went to rescue her. They fought with him for a while then Nikumbha along with Bhanumati became invisible. But, Pradyumna could expose the invisible and was able to locate them. But this time Nikumbha turned himself into a yellow vulture and fought with them. After sometime, he became exhausted and fell to the ground. Pradyumna immediately took Bhanumati into his chariot. Nikumbha then flew towards his city Shatpura and hid himself. Pradyumna taunted him for a while and he came to fight again. This time Lord Krishna raised his discus. In fear, the demon Nikumbha left his body. Everybody thought he was dead. But Pradyumna told he had escaped from his body. Soon his body vanished and he split each fraction of his body into separate bits and covered each bit with an illusory body and there were thousands of Nikumbhas. Lord Krishna and the others did the same and a great fight ensued between them. When all of Nikumbhas forms fused into one, Lord Krishna with his discus killed him. Sage Narada then arrived and asked them to get Bhanumati and Sahadeva (one of the Pandavas) married. They did so and lived happily ever after.

Devotion Wins All

There was once an Asura (Demon) named Hiranyakashipu. He was the younger brother of Hiranyaksha (who was killed by the Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu). In order to avenge the death of his brother, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penances. Lord Brahma was pleased with his austerities and asked him what he wanted. Hiranyakashipu asked for a boon that he should neither be killed by a man nor a beast, neither by day nor by night, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither on earth nor in the sky and finally without any weapon. Brahma granted him this boon. With this boon, Hiranyakashipu became very powerful and troubled everyone in the three worlds. He asked everyone to treat him as God as he felt he was equivalent to one with his new gained powers. Everyone had to obey him as they were afraid of him. But his son, Prahalad, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. When he was in the womb of his mother, Kayadu, he listened to many stories of Lord Vishnu from Sage Narada and developed firm faith i...

Why Tulsi Is Not Offered While Worshipping Ganesha

Once upon a time Tulsi, the daughter of Dharmaraj, was visiting all the holy places reciting the name of Lord Vishnu in order to get married. Once, in her journey on the banks of the Ganges she saw a handsome man with a charming smile on his face wearing yellow silken garments and sandalwood paste on his limbs and wearing gem-studded ornaments. He was meditating on Lord Vishnu as well. This handsome man was none other than Lord Ganesha. Tulsi immediately fell for him and asked him who he was. But, Lord Ganesha did not respond. She then poured some water on him and pushed him with her forefinger. Though Ganesha's meditation was disturbed, he smiled and asked her who she was. After giving her introduction, she asked him to marry her. Ganesha objected saying he was a celibate and not interested in worldly matters. Tulsi got angry and cursed him saying he will have to marry a wicked lady. In turn Ganesha cursed her saying she will turn into a plant and will marry a demon named S...
